Shining Through the Darkness

A light will always shine brightest in the darkness.

I find it amazing how one small candle or night light can illuminate an entire room. I tend to wander around my apartment at night without my glasses, and that often leads to missed steps and stubbed toes.

However, a little light from my phone’s screen changes everything. Suddenly I see what’s right in front of me. I know exactly how far the edge of my bed is or if there’s a cat toy on the floor.

I see things as they really are. I see the truth.

That’s what happens when the light of the Gospel shines on our hearts. Suddenly we see the truth of our sin and how it separates us from God. We see the truth of redemption in Christ on the cross.

This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. (John 3:19-21 NIV)

In order to see the light we must also see the unfortunate truth that the world loves darkness. You don’t need to look very far to prove that. It’s everywhere.

Politics. Media. TV. Movies. The love of money. The love of self above all else.

I know it sounds negative, but this is the sober truth. We all know what it’s like to cling to darkness.

For years I clung to disordered eating and the idol of self-obsession. I was depressed and anxious, but I was addicted to it. I couldn’t escape myself, and I fought desperately for control when it felt like I had none.

But then I was faced with the truth: I could either live this self-destructive way forever, or find freedom, peace, and joy by fully surrendering to Jesus.

I chose Jesus, and though I am far from perfect, I know He is the better portion.

I discovered that one little light changes everything. The spark of God’s love and the truth of His Word transforms us still today.

Shining Through the Darkness

Lovely one, if you are sincerely seeking truth then you will find it in Jesus. I implore you to read the Gospel for yourself. John is a great place to start. What do you have to lose?

If you’re like me from a few years ago–a Christian girl who’s only “halfway” following–then I hope this post encourages you.

You’ll never regret surrendering your life to Christ, but if you do it halfway, you will miss out on the Kingdom.

This isn’t the day to keep living in the same lies and regrets. Today is the day to receive God’s light and to shine for all the world to see.

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:16 NIV)

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. (Isaiah 60:1-3 NIV)
