What, Why, and Where I Write~Day 1 of The 30 Day Blog Challenge

Happy New Year lovely readers and followers! I needed some blogging motivation for this month, so I decided to partner with Courtney of 1Timothy4:12Girl for the 30 Day  Blog Challenge! Every day will feature a new post, which will help you get to know me more as I connect with you on a deeper level!

So what do I write? Well, I obviously blog, but my writing life didn’t start there. I guess it really started in elementary school when I wrote my own “episode” of Ed Edd n Eddy (the best TV show ever), where the Eds met aliens down in their cul-de-sac sewer system.  I know, I’m that creative. My fourth grade teacher was impressed and a little in shock at my dedication to the story and dialogue, but I never really wrote much after that until middle school. I actually thought I was going to be a famous artist or rock star someday.

My love of writing really took off in the ninth grade, when I would doodle poetry in my notebook during my first period algebra class. I don’t know why, but math classes always stoke my creative juices. I actually liked that class, but my mind was always wandering in music and lyrics of its own.

Eventually I found the courage to show one of my poems to my English teacher, and she suggested I enter a poetry competition. I found out that the university near my house was hosting one for high school students, so I entered, not thinking I even stood a chance.

When the letter came in the mail from the competition, I was expecting a “sorry, better luck next time” letter to be in the envelope. I was wrong–I got honorable mention! I found out I was the youngest competitor to even place in the competition, and the dean loved my reading. I really don’t like writing about this because I hate bragging about myself. But this moment in my life was pivotal; it was the moment I knew I stood a chance in the writing world.

Ever since then I wrote bits of poetry and short stories. I’ve entered a few competitions with no luck (does anyone know of any good poetry competitions??). I have a mentor who has always been such a huge encouragement to me. She brags about me nonstop, and I really can’t believe how blessed I am to have her influence and guidance in my life.

By the time my senior year rolled around, one of my poems ended up turning into a mini novel. I never published it, and probably never will. It’s just too personal and not terribly interesting. Eventually I started working on another book, which is the current novel I am editing (which I’m super excited about!!).

Almost three years ago, God rocked my world when I was introduced to a Christian blog that I loved so much. I loved the way the author was so open and honest about her life and faith, and the way the Lord used her to impact the lives of other women. I wanted to do that, so I started my own blog. As I keep growing, I can see that blogging is no easy task, but I’m in love with it. My goal is to glorify God with my writing the best that I can.

So now you know what and why I write. As to where I write? That would be either curled up in my recliner, in bed with my cat, or at my little portable card table set up in my room. Sometimes I still doodle poetry in class, but most of the time I find myself daydreaming of characters and blog post ideas. Oh the life of a writer!

Thanks for reading! Do you like to write? Tell me about your love of writing and why you do it in the comments below!

The Moment Your Story Begins

I don’t know about you, but I think a lot of life goes by unnoticed. We get so busy and distracted, that the little things are often ignored. Normally our major problems and stresses take up so much of our mental energy, that life’s blessings just don’t seem to really register.

Now we all go through dark seasons, and this isn’t me just trying to tell you to be thankful and get over the bad times like they aren’t real. Life happens. I get it, and so does Jesus. In fact, you can take all of your burdens to Him (1 Peter 5:7).

Through all of the drama and stress of living, have you ever wondered if God is even there? Maybe He seems distant or hard to get a hold of. Maybe it feels like God doesn’t even love you anymore.

I get the struggle, and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a Christian alive who can’t sympathize with this. I just want to remind you that He is there. God may seem distant, but the sun and moon are also distant, yet we know they exist as guiding lights in our ever changing world.

We may not be able to see all that God is doing in our lives right now, and things may turn out different than we hoped or planned for them to. However, God has a vision that extends way beyond our own. He can see into all eternity. He knows the past, the present, and the future. He is the God who was and is and is to come (Revelation 4:8).

This concept can be best understood by looking at the Old Testament. By itself it is almost, well…unfinished. Here the people of God are left waiting and hoping for the promised Messiah to save them from their sins and deliver them from the burden of the Law. Then God showed up–sending His Son Jesus to save the world by dying on a cross (John 3:16).

God could see the end even from the beginning, and we are a part of the story!

If you ever think for a moment that God doesn’t love you, please know that you can’t be further from the truth. Jesus paid the ultimate price for you out of love–not force. There is nothing you can do to earn salvation. Jesus has done it all. What God really wants is a humble and repentant heart who desires to put Him first.

Yes, there will be failures and unexpected plot twists in our lives, but like any good story that is all part of the master plan. So don’t ignore those little moments of life. Don’t ignore the storms God uses to build and shape your character. Don’t ignore the blessings God brings to let you know He’s still there. He’s not finished yet. In fact, the moment you choose Jesus is the moment your story truly begins.

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God (Hebrews 12:1-2 NKJV).

The Liebster Award Strikes Back!

Happy Friday everyone! And yes, the title of this post is a Star Wars reference lol. Normally today would be a Fashion Friday post, but today is special because I am honored to receive another Liebster Award!

Even though I have already been nominated for one of these before, it’s still so awesome and encouraging to receive another. Now that I have been working harder to make writing and blogging a priority, this has come at just the perfect time (God is good)!

I just want to give a huge thank you to Leslie over at Forever Joyful for nominating me! Her blog is dedicated to helping families point their children toward Christ through learning ideas. You should really check her out when you get the chance 🙂

The Liebster Award is passed from blogger to blogger as a source of encouragement. Who doesn’t love to be encouraged? Each Liebster Award recipient should:

  • Post the award to her blog
  • Answer the nominating blogger’s ten question interview
  • Nominate 3-10 other bloggers with fewer than 3,000 followers whom she wants to encourage
  • Create ten questions for the new nominees.

Okay, so now’s the fun part. Time to answer Leslie’s awesome questions!

  1. What is your favorite memory associated with blogging?

My favorite memory is probably whenever I received an inspiring comment or an award like this!

2. What is the biggest challenge you’ve overcome in blogging?

The biggest challenge I have overcome so far is the fear of expressing myself. I now know that God wants me to share the truth of His word and my feelings–whether everyone likes them or not.

3. What is your favorite aspect of blogging?

My favorite aspect of blogging is being able to share my life and worldview with others, and being able to connect with the blogging community.

4. How has your blog impacted your family?

My family and friends have always been very supportive of me, and they always give me encouragement or ideas for posts.

5. What is your top blogging goal for 2016?

My top blogging goal(s) are to stay on schedule and to focus more on connecting with other bloggers. One way I am doing this is by the #GoLoveSomeone Challenge!

6. If you could sum up your life priorities in five words, what would they be?

Jesus, family, art, school, work.

7. What is your favorite book (other than the Bible) and why?

This is such a difficult question! I feel that this changes based on the season of my life. Right now I just finished the book, All for Anna by Nicole Deese (which is free right now on Amazon Kindle!). I loved it so much because it is about a nurse who has to overcome a bad car accident where a young girl dies and the post traumatic stress disorder she endures from it. I can really relate to the way she struggles to open up and surrender her life to God.

8. What is your favorite Scripture and why?

I will lift up my eyes to the hills—
From whence comes my help?
My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.

 He will not allow your foot to be moved;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
 Behold, He who keeps Israel
Shall neither slumber nor sleep.

 The Lord is your keeper;
The Lord is your shade at your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
Nor the moon by night.

 The Lord shall preserve you from all evil;
He shall preserve your soul.
The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in
From this time forth, and even forevermore (Psalm 121:1-8 NKJV).

This whole Psalm is symbolic of the strength and faithfulness God gives me. I discovered it around the time my Grandpa died, and it was a real comfort then. I’m sure this will always be my life verse!

9. What should we be teaching our children about how to become better writers?

Teach them their worth in Christ first, or else they will never express themselves to their full potential. Then I would encourage them to write without fear of judgment–just let it flow from the heart.

10. Share a fun random fact.

Okay, so fun fact about me: I’m on a gluten and dairy free diet (as well as a few other restrictions) for my IBS. Any other GF/DF readers on here?

I Nominate:

  • valOvalO–She’s a brand new blogger who is very creative. She is definitely good at expressing her identity in Christ.
  • Katarina of Quiet Ponderings of a Wondering Heart. She’s a teenage blogger with some seriously inspirational posts and interesting book reviews.
  • Giovanna of giovannaventola.com. Are you looking for health and fitness inspiration? Giovanna is a personal trainer who writes beautifully about her passion.
  • Beckie of Spotlight. She’s a Christian writer as well as a wife and mother. She writes about spiritual inspiration among other topics.
  • Mfon of Dainty M. She’s a Christian blogger who is super relatable. She writes on several different topics from spiritual inspiration to hairstyles!
  • Stephanie of StyledBySteph96.  She is a very beautiful young woman with a classy, feminine, yet edgy sense of style.

Your Questions (Which may be very random):

  1. Why did you start blogging?
  2. What other forms of writing do you like to practice (if any)?
  3. Coffee or tea?
  4. Do you have any other artistic interests/hobbies?
  5. What is your biggest New Year’s resolution?
  6. Do you keep a journal or diary?
  7. What is your favorite blog post that you have written so far?
  8. Star Wars or Star Trek?
  9. What is the name and artist of the last song you listened to?
  10. What is the best dream you ever had?

Okay, have fun!  Although I follow some amazing bloggers, these are the ones who have been catching my eye most recently. Thanks for taking the time to read this post:) I hope that everyone here will check out these cool blogs. Have a great weekend!
