Easy Holiday Fashion + The Meaning of Christmas

It’s officially the holidays! ‘Tis the season for time with family, gift shopping, Christmas music, and delicious food (Oh, the food!). And of course, if you’re a college student like me, then you must also battle through finals. All of this hustling around can be pretty disorienting–even the fun parts.

It makes you wonder, what is this all for? Why do we spend these cold winter months gathering together and giving each other gifts? What is the magic of Christmas?

Well, it’s not really magic at all. It’s the power of the Holy Spirit, working through the love of God.

You see, Christmas and the holiday season represents everything that Jesus is–peace, love, hope, faith, selflessness, and grace. Although this is a post on holiday fashion, I want you to keep these truths in mind. This world not only needs more of Christmas–it needs more of the Savior.

And now time for some holiday fashion! Here are 3 easy looks to fit every style.

Midnight Flower

This look is for the girl who loves a night out–or who loves a stylish night in. When I think of holiday colors, my mind automatically sees red and green. However, a deep navy also adds a dramatic winter flair to your wardrobe.

Pair your midnight blue with a bold floral pattern–one of this year’s most popular prints. A long sleeve dress is classy and keeps everyone’s eyes on your statement look.

Winter Blush

Sometimes it’s the  subtle details that speak the loudest. Most people don’t think of wearing pastels in the winter, but a soft blush is romantic and warm for the holidays!

Pair a simple blush sweater with floral patch jeans.  A blush wool trench coat will add a touch of glamour at night, while a pair of pink cat eye shades will make you look chic during the day!

Fab and Festive

This look is for the girl who is full of the Christmas spirit! If a fun holiday outfit that looks pretty and cheerful is what you’re aiming for, then this is for you!

Channel your inner elf with reindeer leggings and a red fair isle tunic. Cute Christmas accessories like these snowflake earrings finish the look, but don’t forget the sugar cookies!

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6 NIV)

Pretty as a Peach

Happy Friday lovely readers and followers! I’ve been having a long, yet productive week, and I’m so glad that I get to relax a little this weekend. Makeup has become my latest obsession over these past few months. I always get nice makeup for Christmas (especially from my sister), including Laura Geller and Bare Minerals.

When I think about all of the makeup mistakes I’ve made as a teen, it really makes me laugh. I used to have “raccoon eyes” when I experimented with eyeliner, and I even wore black lipstick in middle school! #rebel. Do you have any embarrassing makeup stories? Let me know in the comments below.

Today’s collage is dedicated to the color palette of the year–peach! I think the reason Hollywood’s makeup artists are so obsessed with peach is because it looks flattering on everyone. It gives a soft glow, without ever being too bright or too dark. This makes it the ideal shade for blush or a highlighter.

Peach eye shadow has also become a new trend. The key to mastering this summer look without falling into red-eye territory is by blending your peach eyeshadow with other bronze and gold shades (see top left palette).

Let’s not forget about lips! Peach lip-gloss or lipstick is an easy way to rock a bolder lip. It’s less intimidating than red, but more mature than pink.

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. (Ephesians 2:10 NLT)

Beauty and the Butterfly~Nature Meets Fashion

Happy Friday lovely readers and followers! I’m starting to become somewhat of a nature lover. I don’t know if it’s because of the warmer weather enticing sprouts of nature to suddenly appear, or the fact that I’m addicted to Safari Live (it’s probably a mix of both).

My creative writing professor has noticed this appreciation of the natural world in my writing and recommended that I read Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard, so I checked it out from my town library. So far it’s a beautiful read, basically poetic non-fiction. Though there really isn’t any major plot to the book, the descriptions of nature are enchanting for those of you who may be looking for that sort of prose.

Anyway, today’s look is all about nature. An enchanted, safari-meets-woods sort of look that anyone can pull off.

Olive green is a hit neutral color this season, and this actually surprised me since darker green hues are usually reserved for fall. I’m not upset in the least bit though, because olive complements most skin tones and hair colors, and it goes well with almost any other color to wear.

I’m obsessed with this top. I mean, who doesn’t love butterflies? My sister and I share a special bond over monarchs. I remember one day when I was in middle school we were sitting in her car parked in front of her apartment with the windows down. Suddenly two monarchs fluttered in and perched themselves on the dash, and it was as if they were just staring at us–until they flew away.

The whimsical, graceful beauty of butterfly prints against an olive or tan neutral is gorgeous. Of course, any animal or insect print–such as zebra, leopard, bumble bee, or ladybug–will do. Keep makeup simple and neutral, using peach powders to give yourself an all natural glow.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV)

How To Wear Gingham

Happy Friday lovely readers and followers! I’m on spring break, and it feels so good not having to worry about going to class. I’m not traveling to some fancy destination, but I have been spending lots of time with some awesome friends. It always feels nice to catch up with people you don’t get so see that often.

Speaking of spring, there are plenty of trends that are hot right now, and I have so many fashion posts coming up to cover them! I love flipping through all of the spring issues of fashion magazines, gathering inspiration as I sip my coffee and go to my happy place.

Today’s trend is all about Gingham! I must admit, when I titled the collage “Gingham Style,” all I could think about was the Gangnam Style song, and now it’s stuck in my head.

(See more of my Polyvore collections)

I know that a lot of you may look at this trend and cringe. Isn’t gingham for picnic blankets and little girl Sunday dresses? Not anymore. Gingham has now been updated in a fresh new way, and I can’t think of a better trend to welcome spring than this classic print.

To keep the gingham print updated, follow these tips:
  • You can start off by wearing gingham in small doses, like the sandal pictured above. Accessories are a great way to experiment with any new trend.
  • Wearing gingham in black and white is fresh and unexpected. It also makes it a little less girly.
  • Playing with shapes like ruffles, bell sleeves, oversize dresses, or a cinched waist takes gingham from little girl to grown up.

Gingham is playful, feminine, and classic. Depending on how you wear it, you can make it vintage or modern–edgy or girly. I say this is a trend you can have loads of fun experimenting with this spring.

Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.’ (Hosea 6:3 NIV)

Bell Sleeves + Lent

Happy Friday lovely readers and followers! Even  though I am not Catholic, I still like to give something up for Lent. It’s like a great big fast, which is awesome for any community of Christian believers who partake in it together.

Most people give up some kind of food for Lent, but not this girl. I remember using Lent as an excuse to give up sweets, but it was all about restricting in order to serve my eating disorder

Since I am in recovery, I choose not to do food fasts. There are plenty of other things to give up, and the purpose of fasting is not to lose weight or change your diet any way. It’s to connect with Jesus.

So this year I am giving up nail biting for Lent. So far it hasn’t gone so well, but that is because I haven’t had the time to paint my nails.

I tend to go through cycles of letting my nails grow out, but then stress and anxiety will flare up this bad habit. I’m determined this time though! Do any of you struggle with nail biting? Please feel free to share your tips on quitting it below.

Okay, it’s time to talk fashion. Today’s collage is about Bell Sleeved Tops.

(See more of my Polyvore collections)

I have a confession to make.

I’ve never really liked flare sleeves. Any sleeve that is poofy or too voluminous is not really my style. I prefer a slim sleeve, but I decided to branch out this year and try a bell sleeve tunic!

I’m starting to really like this trend now. It’s very feminine and romantic, and it can really dress up a simple blouse. If you’re not sure on the bell sleeve trend, try a top with a subtle flare (like the one on the top left).

If you’re a bold fashionista, try a top with bows or ruffles on the sleeves (top right and bottom left). Embellishments add an extra bohemian vibe, which is always trending for spring.

Please keep me in your prayers as I paint my nails and fight my nail-biting with prayer! Hopefully all of the new spring fashion trends will keep me distracted. 🙂

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13 NKJV)
