Growing in God and Inspiring Young Women Through Faith and Fashion

Career Outfit Inspiration + Life Update

Hello lovely readers and followers! It’s been so long since I’ve done a fashion post, but I’ve heard from many of you that you miss them. Today I’m sharing with you a business-casual outfit that is modest and easy to wear at many workplaces.

I’ve been working part-time at a counseling office since last winter, and I love what I do. I assist the office manager in new client intakes and phone calls. They are so much like family to me that it kind of makes me sad to leave.

But all seasons in life change, and God has brought a new season upon my life. Not only am I getting married, but I now have a new full-time job that I am excited to begin. I guess that means it’s time to reassess (or shop) my wardrobe!

Career Essentials

Career Outfit Inspiration + Life Update

There are some items that are just office staples. For me, this would be cardigans. I got this red cardigan from Goodwill brand new. It’s Target brand, and you will find a bunch of their new clothing at Goodwill since they partner with them.

Target’s cardigans always fit well and are of nice quality. This red cardigan stands out against black, taking any outfit from plain to dazzling.

Making a Statement

Career Outfit Inspiration + Life Update

Let’s talk printed pants. I’ve always stayed away from printed jeans, but loose fitting tapered pants have become my new best friend. They are light and airy in the summer and early fall months, but still professional for most offices.

I love these pants because of their bold colors. They make a statement, and both red and blue are flattering colors for most skin tones. The Japanese-style floral pattern also stole my heart.

I got these pants at H&M two years ago. I also scored the lovely floral pants below for $10 last spring. They have the best deals!

Pulling it All Together

No outfit is complete without the right accessories. I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve been a little lazy in the jewelry department. I don’t like anything bulky, but sometimes I still want to make a statement.

Career Outfit Inspiration + Life Update

That’s why I love this pendant I inherited from my grandma after she passed away. The long chain feels light and looks vintage, while the geometric shape of the pendant gives a modern feel.

A simple pair of black flats tie this look together. Flats always look simple and classy, but my feet are super narrow and hard to shop for. I found these ballet flats at Payless, and they have the “scrunchy” sides that keep my feet in place!

I hope you’re enjoying the rest of this summer. Fall brings many transitions, both in the season itself and in our everyday lives. Although things can be scary, I’m learning to embrace life’s adventures as they come.

What about you, lovely one? What new adventures have you been on this summer?

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: (Ecclesiastes 3:1 NIV)

Answering 3 Important Questions About Modesty

It’s almost Memorial Day weekend, which means summer is just around the corner! I can smell the pollen and fresh cut grass already (and so can my allergies). Along with warm summer weather comes summer fashion, which often leaves Christians asking questions about modesty.

Are these shorts long enough? Are tank-tops modest? And what about swimsuits!? Almost every Christian girl has asked herself these questions at some point, including myself. In fact, I’ve written about modesty a few times on this blog.

I think that many of us have questions about modesty that seldom get answered.  I want to use my experience, the Word of God, and the Holy Spirit to tackle 3 important questions about modesty.

1. What Makes Clothing Modest?

When reading scripture on modesty, it’s only natural to have the desire to reflect that in your life. I know that when I was exploring modest fashion, I went a little crazy trying to discern what was appropriate or not.

However, I’ve learned that it’s easy to border on legalism if all we focus on is hemlines. In fact, we can become so obsessed with modesty that we lose our focus on Jesus! Instead of asking what is modest, we need to remember the why behind modesty.

Modesty is not about rules or regulations; it’s about giving Jesus the glory by taking the attention off of ourselves.

in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. (1 Timothy 2:9-10 NKJV

This verse about modesty addresses the core issue behind why we choose to dress immodestly. We want the focus on ourselves. When we dress in revealing or flashy clothes, we are basically wearing a huge sign that says, “look at me.”

Modesty is about dressing with moderation. Instead of trying to have all the latest brands and follow every trend, we should be focused on the mission of spreading the Gospel.

That doesn’t mean we can’t focus on our looks at all or must dress like we’re from the 1800’s. That in itself would be immodest because it’s not following the concept of moderation. Modesty is about balance and turning our hearts toward Jesus as we care for our appearance.

Answering 3 Important Questions About Modesty

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (Colossians 3:2 NIV)

2. Is Modesty Oppressive Toward Women?

The secular argument against modest fashion is that it’s oppressive toward women. The only case that I would agree with this is when a church or organization starts imposing legalistic rules about women’s clothing.

However, this is not true Biblical modesty. We’ve already established that modesty is a heart response to giving Jesus glory with our fashion choices. This is a choice we make freely out of love. How awesome is that?

Modesty actually empowers women by allowing us to root our confidence in Jesus Christ instead of our bodies or clothes. We can focus on the more important eternal qualities, such as helping others and learning new things, when we’re not obsessing over our outward appearance.

True Biblical modesty is not about controlling or oppressing women. It’s about freeing women to celebrate the beauty God gave us inside and out.

Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. (1 Peter 3:3-4 NIV)

3. Is Modesty Only for Girls?

When the topic of modest fashion comes up, it’s often addressed to girls or women. This is probably because modesty is often associated with the goal to prevent men from lusting after us.

This, however, is not the true purpose for modesty. Don’t get me wrong–I’m all for helping out our brothers in Christ. I also realize that we live in a sexually perverted culture due to sin. Therefore, it is wise to teach both our sons and daughters how to dress and act in a way that honors purity.

But we need to remember that modest fashion is about moderation and keeping the focus on Christ instead of ourselves. I know I sound like a broken record, but this really is what modesty is all about.

And this applies to guys as well. Although women commonly struggle in this area because of society’s pressures on outward appearance, there are plenty of men who dress immodestly or for attention.

Modesty is something both men and women should follow in order to honor God and each other. When we seek to love the Lord and one another over our own desires for attention, we build a culture of respect and humility.

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” (1 Peter 5:5 NIV)

Modesty is more than just rules and regulations. It’s empowering for women by encouraging us to root our confidence in Christ. Modesty also teaches both men and women about respect and moderation. The most beautiful truth about modesty is that it guides our hearts back to our amazing Savior. And that, lovely one, is a goal worth pursuing with our whole lives.

Easy Holiday Fashion + The Meaning of Christmas

It’s officially the holidays! ‘Tis the season for time with family, gift shopping, Christmas music, and delicious food (Oh, the food!). And of course, if you’re a college student like me, then you must also battle through finals. All of this hustling around can be pretty disorienting–even the fun parts.

It makes you wonder, what is this all for? Why do we spend these cold winter months gathering together and giving each other gifts? What is the magic of Christmas?

Well, it’s not really magic at all. It’s the power of the Holy Spirit, working through the love of God.

You see, Christmas and the holiday season represents everything that Jesus is–peace, love, hope, faith, selflessness, and grace. Although this is a post on holiday fashion, I want you to keep these truths in mind. This world not only needs more of Christmas–it needs more of the Savior.

And now time for some holiday fashion! Here are 3 easy looks to fit every style.

Midnight Flower

This look is for the girl who loves a night out–or who loves a stylish night in. When I think of holiday colors, my mind automatically sees red and green. However, a deep navy also adds a dramatic winter flair to your wardrobe.

Pair your midnight blue with a bold floral pattern–one of this year’s most popular prints. A long sleeve dress is classy and keeps everyone’s eyes on your statement look.

Winter Blush

Sometimes it’s the  subtle details that speak the loudest. Most people don’t think of wearing pastels in the winter, but a soft blush is romantic and warm for the holidays!

Pair a simple blush sweater with floral patch jeans.  A blush wool trench coat will add a touch of glamour at night, while a pair of pink cat eye shades will make you look chic during the day!

Fab and Festive

This look is for the girl who is full of the Christmas spirit! If a fun holiday outfit that looks pretty and cheerful is what you’re aiming for, then this is for you!

Channel your inner elf with reindeer leggings and a red fair isle tunic. Cute Christmas accessories like these snowflake earrings finish the look, but don’t forget the sugar cookies!

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6 NIV)

How to Rock the Latest Fall Fashion

I’m back! Well…my fashion posts are anyway. I know that it’s been a while since I’ve featured my collages, but I’ve been working on creating quality content on faith issues (while juggling school and life as well).

But I plan on making a comeback with my modest fashion posts! What better way to kick off the return of these posts than a jam-packed feature on the latest fall fashions? I hope you enjoy!

Midnight Floral

Although floral patterns are usually associated with spring, this year they are here to stay! The key to wearing fall florals is making sure that the print is set against a black or navy background.

Pro Tip: If you’re not up to rocking bold florals, try a subtle print on either jewelry or some cute boots. Let your accessories do the talking!

Ruffles and Frills

(See more of my Polyvore collections)

I just love feminine and vintage fashion. Ladies, it’s okay to be girly. And when it comes to ruffles, tassels, and bell sleeves, being girly is a blast! This look is great because it is classy and modest. The extra ruffles add warmth too…or at least that’s my excuse to say the look is practical.

Pro Tip: I love how pastels are still in style for fall–especially lavender. In order to update the look further, pair these girly pieces with some fall boots or dark earrings.

Girly Grunge

While I love being a “girly girl,” there’s a part of me that’s still edgy. Perhaps it’s a remnant of my punk wannabe high school days, but somehow I’m always drawn to these kinds of pieces. 90’s kid style is back with plaid, printed skirts, and even fedoras! And just look at those star-studded boots.

Pro Tip: I like to strike a balance when it comes to “edgier” clothing, as to not look too rebellious. That’s why wearing skirts or a flowy kimono is a great way to soften the look.

Velvet Crush

Velvet Crush fall fashion

(See more of my Polyvore collections)

There are some trends that I just wait to come back in style. Crushed velvet is one of them. I’m so happy to see these soft, textured pieces in stores! Crushed velvet is perfect in cute pastel colors. Pairing these pieces with black colored clothing or accessories makes them stand out in a perfect way.

Pro Tip: How do you keep crushed velvet classy? You can always start with accessories–such as shoes or a purse. I also like a crushed velvet tank top under a black jacket or cardigan. This keeps the look modest and mature.

“The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” (Isaiah 40:8 NIV)

Summer Crochet + God’s Awesome Story

Happy Friday lovely readers and followers! I want to take a few moments to thank everyone who wished me a happy birthday this week. I am now twenty-three years old, and feel as if I’m on the starting line of some awesome changes and life adventures.

I always thought that being a teenager was supposed to be the best part of life. Even with the freedom and naivety of adolescence, I still think that the wisdom and relationship I have with Jesus now has opened the door to even more freedom.

Don’t get me wrong–I’m still far from having everything figured out. But I know deep inside that I’ll never have it all figured out. Only God can see the whole picture of our lives.

The worship pastor at my church gave me some really good advice this week. He told me to keep seeking and praising God and live without fear of the future. If we keep chasing after God, then when we look back at our lives, all of the things in life that don’t make sense right now will come together to create an awesome story.

I know that my story is just beginning, and I’m excited to see what God has in store for my future.

(See more of my Polyvore collections)

In the meantime…let’s talk fashion! I don’t think there’s a better summer staple when it comes to fabrics than crochet. It’s light and airy, yet still textured enough to make a statement. I’m a decent knitter, but I can’t wrap my head around how people can loop yarn into these beautiful designs and patterns with their hooks.

Crochet is everywhere this season, bordering the hems of blouses or showing up on bags and sandals. You can wear it as a pop of color, or in the traditional summer white. Don’t be afraid to mix things up and wear crochet patterns that are in the form of flowers or other girly designs. I also think a crochet cardigan makes the perfect summer cover-up to any dress or swimsuit. Crochet is definitely a trend you can experiment with in a playful, yet classy way.

for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. (Philippians 2:13 NIV)
